The area around Jackson is known for the spectacular and abundant wildlife. One of the main attractions is the National Elk Refuge located just outside Jackson. The elk refuge is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The elk refuge is home to thousands of wild elk that migrate from the surrounding mountains to spend the winter in the Jackson Hole valley. In order to maintain the elk population, a feeding program was established in 1912 because the town of Jackson was built on the area that elk traditionally wintered. The elk refuge is 25,000 acres in size and the elk spend about 6 months on the refuge.
A private contractor offers horse drawn sleigh rides through the elk refuge from mid-December through March. You will never forget the experience of a sleigh ride among a herd of thousands of elk. You need to buy tickets at the visitors center in Jackson and then take a free shuttle bus to the refuge. The entire journey takes about an hour and tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for children 5-12 and kids under 5 are free.
